Human Performance Improvement in Radiology

In order to perform at a high level on a consistent basis, imaging professionals are dependent upon the support of the organizational structure.  The requisite organizational support includes effective management, efficient work process design, work-specific training, and consistent equipment function.  Even the best technologists with optimal support are regularly challenged by the myriad of variables inherent in work that involves patients, sensitive equipment, and sometimes unpredictable fluctuations in workload.  Consistent excellence in diagnostic imaging services requires discovery and propagation of best practices and work innovations within the organization itself.

Human Performance Improvement is a management model that is built upon 5 key principles:

  1. People are fallible, and even the best people make mistakes.
  2. Error-likely situations are predictable, manageable, and preventable.
  3. Individual behavior is influenced by organizational processes and values.
  4. People achieve high levels of performance because of the encouragement and reinforcement received from leaders, peers, and subordinates.
  5. Events can be avoided through an understanding of the reasons mistakes occur and application of the lessons learned from past events (or errors).

QAISys® is designed to enable effective application of the Human Performance Improvement management model.  This discussion topic will be developed extensively over time.
